Radu Marinescu, Dept. Computer Science and Engineering, Politechnica University Timisoara, Romania

Context

The Working Group on Software Evolution is an ERCIM consortium that aims to study formally-founded techniques and associated tools to support software developers in the evolution of large and complex software systems. The ESF RELEASE network is a research network that aims to facilitate interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and interaction on software evolution in a broad sense. In general, the focus of interest is on guiding principles of, and better tools for software evolution.

Because RELEASE ends its activities in 2005, we decided to merge the annual RELEASE meeting with the annual workshop of the ERCIM Working Group in order to achieve a natural transition between both research consortia.

Workshop objectives

The workshop will focus on the special theme Challenges in Software Evolution. The aim of the workshop is to bring together people from academia and industry to identify substantial obstacles to software evolution research and practice, and to propose and discuss about challenges in software evolution. The challenges can either be fundamental in nature (e.g., what are the laws governing software evolution), or can be pragmatic (e.g., how can we provide software evolution techniques and tools that scale up to industrial-size software applications). They can be either narrow or broad in scope, and can be addressed at a short, medium or long term.

Workshop report

One of the goals of the workshop is to agree upon a list of important software evolution challenges. An initial list has already been provided based on input of the participants. During the workshop, we will further discuss about this list, refine it, and try to reach a concensus.

Organisational details

Workshop participation is free of charge. There is no workshop fee. Lunch and coffee breaks are included. At least one dinner is included as well.

Travel and accomodation is not included. Participants will have to make their own travel arrangements.

We have reserved a number of rooms in Hotel Kreuz (to be payed by the participants, except for RELEASE members).
